Removing a cuterebra or warble from a kitten’s nose

It was a heartbreaking sight—the tiny kitten, barely old enough to explore the world, had a swelling on her little pink nose. At first glance, it looked like a small injury, maybe from playing in the grass. But on closer inspection, her rescuers realized the truth: a cuterebra, also known as a warble, had found its way into her delicate skin.

The kitten sneezed softly, her eyes watery and confused, as if wondering why her nose felt so heavy and uncomfortable. Though she still tried to purr when held, it was clear she needed urgent help. No one could bear to think of something living inside her tiny face.

The rescuers carefully brought her to the vet. With steady, experienced hands, the veterinarian explained that the removal had to be done with precision. A cuterebra breathes through a small hole in the skin, and if pulled the wrong way, it could break apart, leaving dangerous infection behind.

The kitten was gently held as the vet widened the breathing hole just enough to begin the extraction. The room was tense as everyone watched. Slowly, with careful coaxing, the parasite was drawn out—longer and larger than anyone expected. Seeing it removed was both shocking and relieving at once. Finally, the warble was gone.

The vet cleaned the wound thoroughly, applying medication to prevent infection. The little kitten sneezed again, but this time it was as though her whole body sighed with relief. Her eyes brightened, and she leaned into the gentle strokes of her caregiver, free at last from the discomfort she had endured.

In the days that followed, her wound healed beautifully. Soon, there was no sign of the ordeal—only a happy, playful kitten who now breathed freely through her tiny nose.

Removing that cuterebra was more than just a medical procedure—it was a chance for the kitten to grow up healthy and strong. For her rescuers, it was a reminder that even the smallest lives deserve great care and love.
