Cubis woke up that morning thinking it would be just another ordinary day. He followed Dad around the house, helping in little ways—handing over small items, copying Dad’s movements, and occasionally causing tiny messes that made them both laugh. There was nothing to hint that something special was waiting for him.
After breakfast, Dad told Cubis to wait in the living room while he “finished some work.” Cubis sat obediently, though curiosity made him peek down the hallway every few seconds. He heard drawers opening, footsteps moving back and forth, and even a quiet chuckle. Cubis scratched his head, wondering what was so interesting.
Finally, Dad returned, holding a small box wrapped in simple paper. Cubis tilted his head, eyes wide. He hadn’t done anything special—no birthdays, no holidays—so why a gift? Dad knelt down and placed the box gently in Cubis’s hands. “Just because,” he said with a warm smile.
Cubis opened it carefully. Inside was a soft blanket stitched with tiny patterns and his name sewn in one corner. At first, Cubis just stared. Then his face lit up. He hugged the blanket tightly, rubbing his cheek against it as if to make sure it was real. The familiar scent made him feel safe and deeply loved.
Dad explained that he had noticed Cubis sometimes felt nervous at night or clung to him during storms. The blanket was meant to comfort him, even when Dad wasn’t right beside him. Cubis’s eyes grew shiny. He wrapped the blanket around his shoulders and leaned into Dad’s chest, letting out a happy little sound.
The rest of the day, Cubis carried the blanket everywhere. He sat with Dad while watching the sunset, shared snacks, and even tried to “tuck” Dad in with it. Each time Dad laughed, Cubis smiled wider, proud of his new treasure.
That evening, as Cubis fell asleep wrapped in the unexpected gift, he learned something important. Love doesn’t always arrive on special days or in big packages.
