It started with a small lump on the side of the tiny kitten’s neck. At first glance, it looked like a swollen insect bite or a minor injury. But as days passed, the swelling became more pronounced, and the little kitten began showing signs of discomfort—scratching, twitching, and becoming unusually lethargic. That’s when the rescuer knew it was time to visit the vet.
Upon arrival at the veterinary clinic, the experienced veterinarian took one look and immediately suspected something more serious: a Cuterebra infestation. Cuterebra, also known as botfly larvae, are parasitic insects that lay eggs near burrows or nests, and when animals pass by, the larvae latch on, burrow into the skin, and begin developing inside their host. It’s horrifying, painful, and must be treated immediately.
With the kitten gently sedated, the vet prepped the area, carefully cleaning and shaving around the swelling to expose the breathing hole—the telltale sign of a botfly larva inside. Viewers watching the procedure in the video are warned: it’s not for the squeamish.
Using a pair of precision forceps, the vet began the delicate extraction process. The kitten remained still, its tiny body rising and falling gently under sedation. Slowly, the larva was coaxed out, inch by disgusting inch, until the entire wriggling parasite was removed. The sight was shocking—large, pale, and pulsating, the larva had been feeding and growing under the kitten’s skin for days.
The moment it was removed, the team let out a collective sigh of relief. The kitten’s wound was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and medication was administered to prevent infection. Most importantly, the little one was safe and finally free from pain.
Just days later, the kitten’s energy returned, and she was back to playing, eating, and exploring like any healthy young cat should. The transformation was amazing.
This veterinary video, though graphic, serves as an important reminder of the realities animals face in the wild or when neglected. With proper care, quick action, and a compassionate hand, even the most disturbing cases can have a happy ending.
