Today, little Cubis the monkey wasn’t his usual playful self. The toys that usually kept him busy sat untouched, and the snacks he normally gobbled up with excitement didn’t even get a glance. Something was off—and it didn’t take long for Mom to figure out what was wrong.
Cubis missed Dad.
Dad had to go away on a short business trip, and ever since he left, Cubis had been unusually quiet. He kept looking toward the front door, listening for footsteps, or glancing at the driveway, hoping to see Dad’s car return. Each time he realized it wasn’t him, his little face would drop and he’d shuffle back to his corner, hugging his favorite blanket close.
Mom tried everything to cheer him up. She brought out his favorite fruit, played his favorite songs, and even showed him silly videos of Dad on her phone. Cubis would smile for a second, but it was clear—nothing could replace the real thing. He missed the way Dad carried him on his shoulder, how they played their silly chase games, and most of all, those warm bedtime cuddles.
Later in the afternoon, Cubis climbed up on the couch and stared out the window, his little chin resting on the ledge. Mom came over and sat beside him, gently rubbing his back. “Daddy will be home soon,” she whispered. “He misses you too.”
Cubis let out a soft sigh and leaned against her, eyes big and thoughtful. It was one of those quiet moments where you realize just how deeply animals can feel love, connection, and longing.
To help pass the time, Mom helped Cubis make a little surprise for Dad—a drawing of their family, with Cubis in the middle holding both of their hands. He smiled proudly when it was done, and for the first time all day, his eyes lit up a little.
Dad may be away now, but love travels any distance. And when he returns, there’s going to be one extra-happy monkey waiting at the door. 🐵❤️
