Cubis may be small, but his heart feels everything deeply—especially when it comes to Dad. So when he saw the suitcase come out and Dad rushing around the house getting ready for a trip, Cubis immediately sensed something was off. His instincts kicked in, and panic started to creep in. Was Dad leaving him behind? Again?
Determined not to be left alone, Cubis hatched a plan. As Dad placed his car key on the entry table for just a moment, Cubis saw his chance. With swift little hands and a quiet tiptoe, he grabbed the key and darted off like a furry little ninja. No one noticed at first—Cubis was too quick.
When it was finally time to go, Dad came to grab the key… and it was gone.
“Where is it?” he muttered, checking his pockets, under papers, even inside his bag. Meanwhile, Cubis sat in the corner with the most innocent look on his face, trying not to give himself away. But there was a flicker of guilt in those big eyes.
Mom joined the search, turning over cushions and retracing steps, until finally… they found it. Hidden neatly behind the curtain, tucked away under Cubis’s favorite blanket.
The moment they discovered it, Cubis ran to Dad, arms outstretched as if saying, “Please don’t go!” It was then they realized the truth: Cubis hadn’t done it to be naughty—he was afraid. The last time Dad went away, Cubis had been mopey and quiet for days. He just didn’t want to feel that again.
Dad knelt down, scooped him up, and gave him a warm hug. “I’ll be back soon, buddy. I promise.”
That seemed to help. Cubis clung tightly for a few more minutes, but eventually let Dad go—with the key this time. Sometimes, all it takes is a little reassurance to calm a worried heart. Even if that heart belongs to a mischievous monkey like Cubis. 🐒❤️🔑
