Always Give Him a Pep Talk Before I Leave the House

Every morning before I step out the door, there’s one ritual I never skip: giving Chooch his daily pep talk.

You’d think I was talking to a child about to take a big math test—but no, it’s just my dog, sitting by the door with those big, soulful eyes and the most dramatic pout you’ve ever seen. The moment he sees me put on shoes or grab my keys, he flops down with a heavy sigh like the world is ending.

That’s when I kneel beside him, scratch his ears, and begin:
“Okay, Chooch. I’m going out, but you’re in charge here, alright? Keep the house safe. No eating the couch. No digging in the laundry. And remember—you’re the goodest boy.

His ears perk up a little, eyes still suspicious, like he’s deciding if I’m trustworthy. I keep going.

“If any squirrels show up, just bark once or twice—no full-blown concerts, okay? And hey, don’t fall asleep by the window waiting for me. I’ll be back before you know it.”

Sometimes he grumbles in response, like he’s reluctantly accepting the assignment. Other times, he licks my face and then turns dramatically away—as if to say, “Fine. Go. Abandon me.”

I always end the talk with a big hug and one last reminder:
“You’ve got this. You’re strong, you’re smart, and you’re the best dog I’ve ever known.”

And somehow, every time, he stays just a little bit calmer. Like deep down, he really does understand the pep talk. He waits by the door, watches the world, and keeps his promise.

It might seem silly to some, but for me and Chooch, it’s our special moment—a mix of love, comfort, and reassurance. Because even the bravest pup needs a little motivation before his human walks out the door. 🐶💬🏡
