On the third day of his trip, Tom was walking through a quiet alley on his way to a local café when he noticed a skinny, scruffy dog curled up under a shaded tree. The pup looked tired, hungry, and wary of people passing by. His ribs were visible, his fur matted, and yet his eyes still held a flicker of hope. Tom knelt down and gently offered a piece of his sandwich. The dog, cautious at first, slowly approached and took the food from his hand. That small moment sparked an unexpected bond.
Over the next few days, Tom kept returning to the same spot with food and clean water. Each time, the dog—whom he began calling “Sol,” meaning “sun” in Spanish—grew more trusting. Soon, Sol began wagging his tail, following Tom around, and even waiting outside his hotel in the morning. Locals told Tom the dog had been seen wandering the area for months, often dodging traffic and scavenging for scraps.
Tom knew he couldn’t leave Sol behind. He made some calls to local animal rescue groups and veterinarians, who helped him get Sol checked out, vaccinated, and ready for travel. The process wasn’t easy—there were forms to fill out, quarantine concerns, and flight arrangements to make—but Tom was determined.
