Mother was surprised to hear Pupu calling.

It was a quiet Sunday morning. Birds chirped outside the window, and the smell of pancakes filled the kitchen. Mother was humming a tune while washing the dishes when she suddenly heard a soft voice from the hallway.

Mama… Mama!

She paused, looking toward the door. “Was that… Pupu?” she whispered to herself.

Again, the voice came. “Mama! I’m here!

Mother wiped her hands on a towel and stepped out of the kitchen. The house was still, except for the soft calling coming from the living room. Her heart beat a little faster—not with fear, but with curiosity.

She peeked around the corner.

There, sitting upright on the couch, was Pupu—the small, fluffy bunny doll that belonged to her daughter, Lily. Pupu was holding a toy phone, and his big button eyes seemed to be staring straight at her.

Mamaaa!” the voice came again—louder this time.

Mother’s eyes widened. “Is Pupu… talking?”

Suddenly, there was a loud giggle from behind the couch. Out popped Lily, holding the matching toy phone and laughing uncontrollably.

“Got you, Mama!” she squealed.

Mother couldn’t help but laugh. “Lily! How did you do that?”

“I put the walkie-talkie in Pupu’s backpack,” Lily explained proudly. “Then I hid and talked into the other one!”

Mother picked up Pupu and found the tiny walkie-talkie tucked into the back zipper. “You really surprised me!” she said, smiling.

“I wanted to make Pupu talk for real,” Lily said. “I thought it would be funny.”

“Well, it worked! For a second, I really believed he was calling me!”

From that day on, Pupu became the family’s talking bunny. He gave messages, told bedtime jokes, and even sang songs during dinner. Whenever Pupu’s voice echoed through the house, everyone smiled—especially Mother, who always remembered the first time she heard him call.
