The morning rush had just started at Molly’s Corner Market when a sudden blur of fur darted through the automatic doors. A tiny gray-and-white kitten skidded across the smooth floor, wide-eyed and trembling. Shoppers gasped as the little creature scampered between shopping carts and displays of fruit, clearly frightened but determined.
Molly, the kind-hearted owner of the store, noticed the kitten hiding beneath the bread shelf. Her heart melted at the sight of its skinny frame and matted fur. She slowly crouched down, speaking softly. “Hey there, little one. You lost?”
The kitten looked up at her with pleading eyes — eyes that seemed to be asking not just for food, but for a second chance.
Carefully, Molly reached out, and to everyone’s surprise, the kitten let her scoop him up. He didn’t hiss or scratch. He just curled up in her arms, as if he’d been waiting for this moment.
Molly didn’t hesitate. She brought out a bowl of warm milk and a blanket from the back room. As the kitten ate, purring softly, a hush fell over the store. Customers gathered, offering help, asking questions, even suggesting names.
“Call him Chance,” said a young girl in a pink coat. “Because he’s getting a second one.”
The name stuck.
Over the next few weeks, Chance became the heart of the store. Molly officially adopted him, and the once-lonely kitten blossomed into a playful, affectionate mascot. Children came by just to visit him, and customers stayed longer, smiling more. The store’s business improved, but more importantly, its spirit changed.
People who once rushed through their day now stopped to pet Chance and chat with each other. The market became more than a place to shop — it became a community.
