Kittens are born blind, deaf, and completely dependent on their mother. But in just 48 days, they go through an incredible transformation from tiny, helpless newborns to curious and playful little cats. Here’s a look at how kittens grow during this early stage of life.
Days 0–7: The Newborn Stage
At birth, kittens weigh just 85–115 grams. Their eyes are closed, their ears folded, and they rely completely on their mother for warmth and nutrition. They spend most of their time sleeping and nursing. Their only sense that works well is touch and smell, which helps them find their mother.
Days 8–14: Eyes Begin to Open
Around day 7 to 10, kittens begin to open their eyes. At first, their vision is blurry and their eyes are a deep blue. Their ears also start to unfold, and they begin to respond to sounds. By the end of the second week, their sense of smell improves, and they may try to wiggle around a bit more.
Days 15–21: Wobbly Walkers
By the third week, kittens start standing and attempting to walk, though they are still wobbly. Their teeth begin to come in, and they become more aware of their littermates and surroundings. Social behaviors like grooming and playing start to emerge.
Days 22–30: Exploration Begins
During the fourth week, kittens grow more confident. They walk better, start playing more often, and may try solid food for the first time. They begin learning from their environment, their mother, and their siblings.
Days 31–48: Rapid Development
By five to seven weeks, kittens are much more active. Their coordination improves, they run, pounce, and chase toys. Their eyes change color from blue to their adult shade. They eat solid food and begin using the litter box. This is also a key socialization period—they learn to interact with humans and other animals.
