Walking into ACCT Philly today was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The shelter is currently facing a crisis—more dogs than they can handle, and not nearly enough adopters stepping forward. Every kennel was filled with wagging tails, hopeful eyes, and quiet whimpers, each pup silently begging for the chance at a home. It’s overwhelming to see so many amazing dogs, each with their own story, waiting for someone to notice them.
I spent time meeting some of them, and I couldn’t believe how sweet and gentle they were. One big goofy boy pressed his nose through the bars, desperate for a scratch behind the ears. A shy little girl curled up in her bed but lit up the moment I sat with her, her tail thumping softly against the floor. Another older dog leaned against my legs, as if saying, “Please, take me with you.” None of them should be here this long, and yet here they are—waiting, hoping, and losing time.
The staff and volunteers are doing everything they can, but they can’t do it alone. The truth is, these dogs don’t just need food or a safe kennel; they need homes. They need families to love them, couches to curl up on, and backyards to run around in. Many are already house-trained, dog-friendly, and eager to learn. All they need is someone willing to give them a chance.
If you or anyone you know has been considering adopting, now is the time. These dogs don’t deserve to fade away behind kennel doors—they deserve to thrive. Even if adoption isn’t possible, fostering, volunteering, or simply spreading the word can make a huge difference.
ACCT Philly is filled with incredible dogs who are ready to give their whole hearts to someone. Please consider visiting, meeting them, and maybe opening your home to one. You won’t just be saving a life—you’ll be gaining a best friend.
