The room was unusually quiet that afternoon, and Cubis kept glancing toward the door as if expecting someone to walk in. Dad noticed the little monkey’s restlessness and chuckled softly. “Missing Luk, huh?” he asked. At the sound of the name, Cubis perked up, his expressive eyes widening with hope. So Dad reached for his phone and said the magic words: “Let’s call Luk.”
The moment the screen lit up and the familiar ringing tone played, Cubis leaned forward eagerly. When Luk’s face finally appeared, smiling ear to ear, Cubis squeaked in excitement, his little hands tapping the screen as if trying to reach through it. Luk laughed, waving energetically. “Cubis! I miss you, buddy!”
Cubis let out a series of soft chirps and tiny “oo-oo” sounds, his version of excited talking. He tilted his head, blinked rapidly, and then covered his face with his hands in pure bashfulness. Luk melted instantly. “Aww, look at you! You remember me!”
As the call continued, Cubis became braver. He brought his favorite toy—an old plush banana—holding it up proudly for Luk to see. Then he pointed to himself, then to the toy, then to the screen, making a cheerful “eh-eh!” Luk knew exactly what that meant. “Yes! It’s still your favorite, huh?”
When Luk mimicked monkey sounds back at him, Cubis froze in surprise… then burst into excited wiggles, shaking his head and bouncing on his blanket. He couldn’t believe Luk was speaking his language! Dad laughed so hard he almost dropped the phone.
But the most touching moment came when Luk said softly, “I’ll visit soon, Cubis. I promise.” Cubis leaned close to the screen, reaching out with both hands, as if trying to hug Luk through the phone. It was the purest expression of longing and love.
When the call ended, Cubis held the phone gently for a moment before placing it against his chest. His eyes softened, and he let out a small, content sigh. Even though Luk wasn’t there in person, Cubis felt connected, comforted, and understood.
It was a simple video call—yet incredibly heartwarming. A moment that proved love always finds a way, even through a screen.
