When rescuing animals, you never really know what you’re going to find. Each day brings a new surprise—sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking, and often a bit of both. One afternoon, I met a tiny kitten who carried a problem far bigger than she was.
At first glance, she seemed like any other stray—thin, tired, and in need of food. But then I noticed a swelling just behind her ear, and as I leaned in closer, I realized what it was: a botfly larva. It was my very first encounter with one, and I felt a mix of alarm and determination. The poor baby had been walking around with this parasite burrowed under her skin, and I could only imagine how uncomfortable she must have been.
Carefully, I prepared what I needed to help her. Gloves on, tools ready, and a steady hand—because the most important thing was to do it gently, ensuring the larva came out completely. As I worked, the kitten squirmed a little, letting out the tiniest cries, but I softly whispered to calm her down. Bit by bit, I eased the botfly larva out, and when it finally emerged, it was both shocking and relieving.
Holding that squirmy little intruder in my hand, I couldn’t believe something like that had been living inside such a fragile creature. But more than anything, I felt relief knowing it was no longer hurting her. I cleaned the wound carefully, gave her some much-needed food, and wrapped her up in a soft blanket.
The transformation was almost instant—she looked lighter, freer, as if a weight had been lifted. Her eyes brightened, and she even let out a small purr, the sweetest thank-you I could ever ask for.
That first encounter with a botfly larva taught me something important: rescue work isn’t always pretty, but the reward of seeing an animal find comfort and relief makes every challenge worth it. That little kitten reminded me why every life, no matter how small, deserves care and love.
