Today was a special day for little Cubis the monkey. Instead of just tagging along on errands, his dad decided it was time for him to handle something important all on his own. “Cubis,” Dad said with a proud smile, “I need you to go buy the vegetables for dinner today. Do you think you can do it?”
Cubis’s eyes grew wide with excitement. He had never been trusted with such a big responsibility before. He puffed out his tiny chest, grabbed the small woven basket, and nodded with confidence. “I’ll do it, Dad!”
With that, Cubis set off toward the market. The street was busy and full of chatter, but he focused on the task at hand. Dad had given him a short list: carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a bunch of leafy greens. At the first stall, Cubis carefully picked out shiny red tomatoes. He remembered what Dad always said—“Check for ones that are firm but not too hard.” Cubis gave each tomato a little squeeze before choosing the best ones.
Next, he went to the carrot stand. The vendor chuckled as Cubis inspected each carrot, holding them up to the light as if they were treasure. He found four crisp, bright-orange ones and tucked them neatly into his basket.
The hardest part came at the leafy greens stall. There were so many types! Spinach, kale, lettuce—how was he supposed to choose? Cubis paused, thinking hard. Then he remembered Dad mentioning how much he loved spinach soup. With a proud grin, Cubis picked a fresh bundle of spinach.
When he finally returned home, the basket full and his little arms tired from carrying it, Dad greeted him with a big hug. “You did it, Cubis! These are perfect.”
Cubis beamed with pride. Not only had he completed the errand, but he also realized that helping his dad was more rewarding than he ever imagined. That evening, as they enjoyed a warm meal together, Dad told him, “You’re growing up to be so responsible.”
Cubis fell asleep later that night with a happy heart, already dreaming of his next big responsibility.
