Diem Was Sad When She Came Home from School and Didn’t See Mom
It had been a long day at school, filled with lessons, laughter with friends, and a little bit of tiredness. Diem was excited to go home, especially because she had drawn a special picture for her mom during art class. She imagined the look on her mom’s face when she would see it—bright colors, a big heart, and the words “I love you, Mom” written with her favorite crayons.
As the school bell rang, Diem grabbed her backpack and rushed out, her heart full of excitement. But the moment she opened the front door, her smile began to fade. The house was quiet. No warm “Welcome home!” from mom. No smell of soup from the kitchen. Just silence.
She looked around. “Mom?” she called out, peeking into every room. But there was no answer. Diem placed her backpack down and held her picture tightly in her hands. She sat on the couch, her small face clouded with sadness.
Maybe Mom had gone out for a little while. Maybe she was just late coming home. But for Diem, the house without her mother felt big and lonely. She missed her hug, her gentle voice, and even her playful scolding when Diem forgot to take off her shoes at the door.
As the minutes passed, Diem quietly sat by the window, watching the road outside, hoping to see a familiar figure walk through the gate. Her eyes sparkled with hope every time a motorbike passed, but it wasn’t her mom.
Finally, after what felt like forever, the door creaked open. “Diem!” Mom called gently, holding a bag of groceries. Diem’s eyes lit up instantly. She ran and threw her arms around her mom.
“I missed you,” she whispered.
“I missed you too,” her mom smiled, brushing back Diem’s hair. “I just stepped out for a bit.”
Diem handed over her drawing, and her mom’s heart melted.
That evening, the house was warm again, filled with hugs, laughter, and the comfort of love that makes everything feel right again.
