How to Handle a Dog Giving Birth at Home

When your dog is about to give birth, it can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Understanding what to do and how to help her safely deliver her puppies is essential. With a little preparation, calmness, and care, you can make the experience smoother for both mom and her newborns.

First, create a comfortable and quiet birthing area. Choose a warm, clean, and private space where she can feel safe and undisturbed. Line a whelping box or a large cardboard box with soft towels or blankets that can be easily washed. Make sure the area is free of drafts and away from noise and other pets.

Next, gather supplies in advance. You’ll need clean towels, disposable gloves, scissors, antiseptic (like iodine), and a small bulb syringe to clear the puppies’ airways if needed. Keep your veterinarian’s phone number nearby in case of emergency or complications.

When labor begins, your dog may pant heavily, become restless, or refuse food. This is normal. Stay nearby to observe quietly. Most dogs instinctively know what to do, so avoid interfering unless necessary. Once the first puppy arrives, the mother will usually clean it and bite off the umbilical cord. If she doesn’t, you can gently wipe the puppy with a clean towel and cut the cord about an inch from the body, tying it off with clean thread if needed.

Make sure each puppy is breathing and nursing. If a puppy is not breathing, gently rub it with a towel or use the bulb syringe to clear its nose and mouth. Keep the newborns warm and close to their mother at all times.

After delivery, let the mother rest and nurse her puppies. Offer her water and small amounts of food. Watch for signs of distress such as heavy bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, or if labor pauses for more than two hours between puppies—these are signs to call your vet immediately.

With patience and preparation, helping your dog give birth at home can be a rewarding experience, creating a bond of trust and love between you and your furry family.
